Mark and Debbie Bell’s journey as Salvation Army volunteers began in the most unlikely of places—Costco. Amid the hustle of shoppers searching for deals, Mark spotted Major Floiran Estrada, commanding officer of The Salvation Army, in his uniform. A simple conversation sparked that day soon grew into a passion for the mission. Mark and Debbie began attending The Salvation Army church, and before long, both were fully immersed in volunteer work. What started as a chance encounter in a crowded store became the catalyst for a legacy of service that has impacted countless lives.

Their willingness to serve has led them to volunteer for a wide range of events, from National Donut Day to Vacation Bible School, the Music & Arts Conservatory, cook-outs, fundraisers, Thanksgiving, the Red Kettle Campaign, and the Angel Tree program. Whether organizing activities, helping with logistics, or simply lending a hand wherever needed, they have consistently gone above and beyond.

Their dedication to service was recognized during National Salvation Army Week in May 2024, when Mark and Debbie were honored with the prestigious Volunteers of the Year award. This award reflects their commitment to ministry, service, stewardship, and fellowship,

Their involvement doesn’t stop at events. In addition to attending Sunday worship at The Salvation Army church each week, Mark is a regular participant in the men’s ministry, while Debbie actively engages in the women’s ministry. In February 2024, they attended the Texas Divisional Leadership Summit THRIVE in Midlothian, Texas.

But it is perhaps their work at The Salvation Army shelter that truly sets them apart. Every Monday evening, Mark and Debbie teach Bible study to the shelter residents, offering not just lessons but also snacks, fellowship, and emotional support. “At our Monday night Bible study, we meet people who may not be having the best day,” said Mark. “We want to remind them of their value in God’s eyes and assure them that they are loved and have incredible worth and purpose.”

Their commitment extends beyond the classroom, as they invest time in preparing lessons and building meaningful relationships with the families and individuals residing at the shelter. They have a unique ability to listen to the residents’ concerns, offering support and guidance that goes beyond what is typically expected of volunteers. Their dedication is not limited to the hours spent at the shelter. They have provided transportation for residents to attend job interviews, church, and even driving school. They remain in contact with several former residents as well as other people they’ve met during their volunteer work.

“When I need someone to step up, I can always count on Mark and Debbie,” says Eloisa Estrada. “They are ‘yes’ people, always ready to give their time and energy wherever needed.”

Their generosity, their commitment to building relationships, and their passion for The Salvation Army’s mission have made a lasting impact. The 2024 Volunteers of the Year award is a fitting tribute to their extraordinary contributions, and they continue to inspire others to serve with the same heart and spirit.
